New Passkey Index shows 90% of accounts eligible but only 42% enrolled, as FIDO introduces deployment guidance and more companies adopt passkeys
As the FIDO Alliance kicks off this year’s Authenticate conference, it is taking a moment to celebrate a milestone. The Alliance estimates that 7 billion passkeys are now in use worldwide, marking a milestone as the organization opens its annual Authenticate conference and releases new research on passwordless authentication adoption.
That looks and sounds like a definitive success, and it is enough for the Alliance to declare that passkeys have gone mainstream, moving from deployment to adoption. “More than a third of successful sign-ins now use a passkey, and while enrollment has grown, the bigger change is that people who have a passkey are using it more of the time.”
Despite growing availability, passwords remain deeply embedded in authentication practices. FIDO acknowledges that closing the gap between passkey enrollment and regular use is now a central challenge.
So, even as FIDO shifts its focus to standardizing digital credentials and agentic commerce, the passkey file remains active. Hence the organization’s release of the 2026 Passkey Index, and its introduction of the new FIDO Passkey Rubric. The former offers the latest overview of passkey adoption, while the latter is “a practical checklist, soon to be available on Passkey Central, that brings together FIDO’s research, UX guidance and expert knowledge.”
