By shaping the standards of identity, control, and compliance today, financial institutions can ensure they remain the indispensable anchors of trust in the agentic economy of tomorrow.

For the past decade, enterprise AI in financial services operated around two core capabilities: prediction and advice.

Banks deployed sophisticated machine learning models to predict credit default, forecast market volatility, and flag fraudulent behaviour, alongside generative systems designed to advise relationship managers and draft client communications. Yet across every predictive score and advisory recommendation, one operational constant remained. The AI processed data, while the human retained exclusive authority over the transaction button.

That boundary is now dissolving. As software agents move from predicting market behaviour to exercising transaction authority, the primary interface of digital commerce is shifting from human screens to agent-to-agent protocols.

Agentic systems do not only synthesise information; they initiate actions, coordinate complex workflows, and trigger payments across the digital economy. When an autonomous software agent is empowered to scour the market, negotiate terms, and execute a purchase on behalf of a human principal, traditional touchpoints get blurred.

For the executives gathered at Sibos, this evolution poses profound questions about the future of control. How do we adapt our approval chains? How do we ensure auditability? Where does liability sit if a machine hallucinates an unauthorised transaction? And, most critically, when the agent does the buying, who ultimately owns the customer relationship?

At present, the governance framework for agentic commerce is not being written by the traditional financial sector. It is being forged in real time across the legal system, technology standards bodies, and web infrastructure providers. To understand the operational reality that banks will soon inherit, or must choose to shape, we must examine three foundational developments currently defining the rules of agentic finance.
