Toward a World Without Passwords

— Passkeys Today and Beyond —

FIDO Alliance, which drives the standardization of technical specifications and certification programs for online authentication that replaces passwords, has decided to hold its 13th seminar since 2014.

Amid growing demand for authentication that does not rely on passwords, FIDO Alliance has worked to balance security and convenience by developing simple, robust authentication technology based on public-key cryptography, standardizing certification programs around it, and promoting its adoption. Since last year, the Alliance has broadened its focus beyond passkey authentication alone to encompass the entire account lifecycle through digital credentials.

This year marks the 13th FIDO Tokyo Seminar, which will once again be held in person.

Last year’s 12th FIDO Tokyo Seminar, themed “The Effectiveness of Passkeys Against Phishing and the Latest Trends,” generated significant momentum toward passkey adoption. That momentum has only accelerated this year. Following an incident of unauthorized access to brokerage accounts last year, Japan’s Financial Services Agency (FSA) revised its “Comprehensive Guidelines for Supervision of Financial Instruments Business Operators, etc.,” clarifying the requirement to implement phishing-resistant multi-factor authentication. The Japan Securities Dealers Association (JSDA) likewise revised its guidelines, calling on member firms to implement passkeys and similar measures for critical operations such as login, withdrawals, and account changes. JSDA joined FIDO Alliance as a liaison member, and in response to the revised guidelines, securities firms have moved steadily toward passkey adoption. This trend extends well beyond the securities industry: passkeys are being adopted across a wide range of sectors and services, and are becoming a standard authentication method for consumer-facing services.

In December of last year, FIDO Alliance also established a new Digital Credentials Working Group (DCWG) and began working in earnest on digital credentials — enabling identity documents such as driver’s licenses and passports to be securely stored and presented via digital wallets. Drawing on the interoperability expertise, including cross-device use, developed through passkey adoption, FIDO Alliance is advancing standardization in this space, including the development of certification programs for wallets. The goal is to build a cross-industry, interoperable framework that allows credentials to be presented securely online, giving service providers confidence in accepting them.

In addition, this past April FIDO Alliance established a new working group, the Agentic Authentication Technical Working Group, to address the role AI agents play in authentication and digital credential scenarios. Looking ahead, AI agents are expected to act on people’s behalf across a wide range of areas, including internal approval and authorization processes. The Payment Technical Working Group is also examining scenarios in which AI agents make online purchases and payments on an individual’s behalf.

In each of these scenarios, a key emerging challenge is how to authenticate that an AI agent is genuinely acting as the authorized representative of the person or organization it claims to represent, and operating within its approved scope. This seminar will introduce FIDO Alliance’s latest efforts and initiatives in this area.

Under the theme “Passkeys Today and Beyond,” the seminar will share the latest trends in passkey adoption in Japan and offer practical insights for any company or organization considering passkey adoption.
