W3C Launches Web Authentication Work Based on FIDO Specifications

Brett McDowell, Executive Director

Today marks an important milestone on the FIDO Alliance’s path towards providing interoperable strong authentication across the Web.

The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), the international standards organization for the World Wide Web, announced today that it is officially launching a new standards effort in Web Authentication based upon the FIDO 2.0 Web APIs that our members submitted last November. Standardizing the submitted FIDO Web APIs can ensure standards-based strong authentication across all Web browsers and related Web platform infrastructure.

The W3C’s launch of this standardization work and chartering of the Web Authentication Working Group is significant progress for Web security and moves the FIDO Alliance closer to fulfilling our mission of developing and promoting global adoption of standards-based, interoperable, simple and strong authentication.

For W3C members that want to participate in the new Web Authentication Working Group, the W3C also announced that the group’s first meeting will take place on March 4 in San Francisco.
