Technologists looking to push authentication beyond the password heralded Google’s announcement yesterday that it would offer users a USB security key-stick as a second-factor authentication. The device will allow computer-based users of Google Chrome to log in securely to their accounts by plugging the stick into their USB port. Advocates were delighted by Google’s support of the device, which is built on open protocols from the Fast Identity Online Alliance, or FIDO Alliance.
