TOKYO and MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIF., December 8, 2016 – The FIDO Alliance announced today the launch of the FIDO Japan Working Group to accelerate the use of FIDO authentication in Japan. Already available from many service and technology providers in Japan, FIDO authentication reduces organizations’ and users’ reliance on passwords with interoperable on-device authentication that is stronger and easier to use.
At launch, 11 leading FIDO Alliance member companies active in the Japan market are participating in the FIDO Japan Working Group: Dai Nippon Printing Co., Ltd.; DDS, Inc; Fujitsu Limited; International Systems Research Co.; Lenovo Corporation; Nok Nok Labs, Inc.; NTT DOCOMO, INC.; NXP Semiconductors Japan; Rakuten, Inc.; The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ, Ltd.; and Yahoo Japan Corporation.
“The FIDO Japan Working Group has been created to address the growing interest in FIDO authentication from stakeholders across a wide variety of industries in Japan who want to reduce fraud risk while providing better, faster user experiences,” said Brett McDowell, executive director of the FIDO Alliance. “By working at a local level, this working group will be an effective team within the FIDO Alliance to promote FIDO solutions, improve FIDO awareness and collect regional requirements so FIDO standards can best address the authentication needs of the Japan market.”
The FIDO Japan Working Group will be led by chair Koichi Moriyama, senior director of product innovation at NTT DOCOMO, INC. A FIDO Alliance board member and leading service provider in Japan, DOCOMO offers FIDO authentication to its millions of subscribers using fingerprint sensors and iris recognition across Android and iOS platforms.

About the FIDO Alliance
The FIDO (Fast IDentity Online) Alliance, www.fidoalliance.org, was formed in July 2012 to address the lack of interoperability among strong authentication technologies, and remedy the problems users face with creating and remembering multiple usernames and passwords. The FIDO Alliance is changing the nature of authentication with standards for simpler, stronger authentication that define an open, scalable, interoperable set of mechanisms that reduce reliance on passwords. FIDO authentication is stronger, private, and easier to use when authenticating to online services.
