SUMMARY:Workshop on Fingerprint Presentation Attack Detection
DESCRIPTION:Overview\n\n\n\nThe use of fingerprint recognition is increasing day by day. Not only are we required (in European countries) to capture our fingerprints in order to obtain a passport or (soon) be granted entry into the EU\, but we use them on a daily basis for basic tasks such as unlocking our smartphones or confirming a bank transaction. \n\n\n\nIn spite of the numerous benefits of utilising fingerprint recognition\, some drawbacks come with this technology: one does not need to be a tech expert to carry out a presentation attack that may fool a system into believing you are someone else. Unattended capture devices need to have a Presentation Attack Detection (PAD) subsystem\, to prevent such attacks. \n\n\n\nThe workshop raises awareness about this issue and about the current efforts of the biometric community in order to minimise the impact of such attacks. We will thus present a definition of the problem and provide the audience with possible solutions and a look into the future steps. \n\n\n\nThis workshop will feature presentations by experts from academic\, industry\, and governmental organisations and will facilitate interactions and discussions between the experts and the audience. \n\n\n\nSpeaker\n\n\n\nStephanie Shuckers is the Director of the Center for Identification Technology Research (CITeR)\, and will be presenting on “FIDO Biometric Certification: ISO-Compliant and Available via a Global Laboratory Network.”

SUMMARY:Workshop on Foundational Cybersecurity Activities for IoT Device Manufacturers
DESCRIPTION:Location\n\n\n\nNCCoE9700 Great Seneca Highway\, Rockville\, MD 20850 \n\n\n\nFeatured Keynote\n\n\n\nBrad GoodmanFIDO DO Working Group ChairDistinguished Member of Technical Staff\, Edge Computing Architect\, Dell \n\n\n\nOverview\n\n\n\nLeveraging FIDO Alliance cybersecurity standards in support of IR8259 \n\n\n\nAs highlighted in IR8259\, “If a device is expected to be more trusted by customers\, particularly to remain in a secure state and stay outside the control or access of unauthorized entities\, then it is likely that technical means implemented on or with that device will have to be more robust.”. \n\n\n\nFor IR8259 to be implemented effectively\, devices must cooperate reliably and securely.  This requires that there be a strongly authenticated and protected communication channel between M2M and IoT devices.  Existing protocols and authentication techniques can help to create and maintain such a channel.  However\, an absolute requirement for this is a rigorous enrollment process\, providing positive assurance of each machine’s identity\, in order to establish the necessary foundation for secure interactions.  A weak enrollment procedure of even one part leaves the system vulnerable to impersonation and compromise. \n\n\n\nFrom a cybersecurity viewpoint this requires that IoT products must: (a) be able to establish secure communication channels\, (b) provide uses with a secure and private method of accessing their IoT data (c) be able to be provisioned with robust software\, (d) be securely connected to their management platform (whether in the cloud or on-site)\, (e) be software upgradable (to respond to cyber threats and also to deliver new features) and (f) can be returned to a ‘Known Good State’ in a worse case situation. Additionally\, users of a device must be able to log-in securely via their cloud portal to access their data.  \n\n\n\nIn this presentation\, Brad will review key points raised by IR8259 and show how:  \n\n\n\n\nSecure communication channels can be established for M2M and IoT applications\n\n\n\nFIDO passkeys for phishing resistant\, passwordless public key based secure user data access via cloud portals. \n\n\n\nHow FDO and other FIDO solutions now in development can make the task of creating flexible yet robust IoT devices that can be protected throughout their lifetime.

SUMMARY:Cybersecurity Policy Forum: Identity\, Authentication and the Road Ahead
DESCRIPTION:Overview\n\n\n\n2025 brings a new year and a new President – Washington will be full of change – but one constant is that Americans continue to be victimized at an increasing pace by identity theft and identity-related cybercrime. \n\n\n\nAnnual losses from identity-related cybercrime now soar into hundreds of billions of dollars and millions of Americans struggle to recover from identity theft. Meanwhile\, the rise of deepfakes powered by Generative AI threatens to send these problems into overdrive. The need for policymakers to take action to get ahead of these attacks is greater than ever. \n\n\n\nOn Tuesday\, January 28\, 2025 in Washington D.C.\, the Better Identity Coalition\, FIDO Alliance\, and the Identity Theft Resource Center (ITRC) joined forces to present a full-day policy forum looking at “Identity\, Authentication and the Road Ahead.” The event featured a number of notable sessions and discussions\, including: \n\n\n\n\nThe impact of AI-powered emerging threats to the identity ecosystem – and what tools can be used to defend against them\n\n\n\nThe release of the ITRC’s Annual Data Breach Report\n\n\n\nPerspectives on skyrocketing identity-related cybercrime – and what policymakers should look to do about it.\n\n\n\nAn update on passkeys and ways that the acceleration of FIDO authentication is finally enabling people to kill the password\n\n\n\nExperiences from identity theft victims\, who will share their stories\n\n\n\n\nWatch the videos below:

SUMMARY:NIST SP 800-63 Digital Identity Standard: Updates & What It Means for Passkeys
DESCRIPTION:About the NIST SP 800-63 \n\n\n\nThe NIST SP 800-63-3 Digital Identity Standard is a free publication by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The first set of digital identity guidelines was published in 2003; this latest update will be the fourth revision\, as NIST continues to update the guidance to address the evolving marketplace and security risks across the digital landscape. \n\n\n\nThe NIST SP 800-63 includes a suite of four volumes to outline the process and technical requirements for achieving digital identity management assurance levels for identity proofing\, user authentication\, and federation\, with additional guidance on security\, privacy\, equity\, and usability. The NIST digital identity guidelines have been integrated into security frameworks and cybersecurity requirements throughout the U.S.\, international governments\, and the global marketplace. Therefore\, the new revision will have significant implications for digital identity management in both the public and private sectors. \n\n\n\nWhy revise NIST SP 800-63 now?\n\n\n\nSince the acceleration of digital transformation over the last five years\, the proliferation of online services has driven the need for dependable\, equitable\, secure\, and privacy-conscious digital identity solutions. The NIST SP 800-63\, Revision 4\, addresses the evolving digital environment since its last major update in 2017 and covers real-world online security risks and the latest in privacy\, equity\, and usability standards. \n\n\n\nWith the advancement of passkeys since 2022\, the fourth revision is also set to focus significantly on the value of FIDO authentication and passkey implementation for a breadth of passkey use cases. \n\n\n\nTo get the inside scoop from FIDO and NIST subject matter experts\, watch the on-demand webinar covering the new guidelines and what it means for passkeys. Then\, make any public comments on the second Public Draft of Revision 4\, by October 7\, 2024. Learn more on NIST’s website at https://pages.nist.gov/800-63-4/. \n\n\n\n\nWATCH THE PRESENTATION
